Nelson, BC, known for its rich architectural heritage, and stunning natural features, forms a key part of the commercial and population core in the West Kootenay Region. Challenged with the opportunity of generating high quality, aesthetically pleasing, and functional laneway housing for the cities expanding residential areas, it was important that the design of the laneway house be reflective of the city. Fitting into the vernacular language of Nelson's housing stock, the laneway house provides a pedestrian and neighborhood-friendly structure that promotes sustainable growth for the city.

Inspired by the indigenous plank homes of the Pacific Northwest, the structure is simple in form, utilizing wood screens that let in natural light during the day while softening the streetscape. The building’s simple form reduces exposed surface area and energy bills, while at the same time making for a cost effective structure that is quick to assemble. Windows are operable and plentiful, allowing for a sufficient cross-breeze during the summer months, and the building envelope uses external insulation, reducing thermal bridging and increasing occupant comfort during the winter.
